Dance teachings

Some insights and experiences from my work as a dance teacher.

The work

The work that I teach is focuses on the instant composition as the most immediate form of art to create dance pieces and performances. The method proposed help the dancer or the actor to create actions and characters in an intuitive and spontaneous way. This clear intention of study makes the approach to the movement direct and pragmatic and, at the same time, it remains open to the personal poetic of each person. The student is guided through a progressive approach that starts from the simplicity of the individual act, to reach the complexity and richness of an instantaneous group composition.

Work process

The work I teach in classes is structured around a process that includes four specific areas of study and practice. To each area correspond well-defined techniques and exercises that allow for constant development of the stage practice of instant composition.

These four areas are defined by an in-depth study of time, space, voice and the use of objects on stage. The work involving the relationship between dance and live music is encapsulated in the Tempo area.

Of course, these four areas coexist and can intertwine simultaneously during the staging of a performance, but this analytical approach allows for an insightful study at each level.

The only time we live is the present moment. Time as the present moment, but also as a continue flow of different present moments. Time is participation, participation in any movement is made, participation in phrasing, participation in live music. Time is the main instrument used to enter into the flow of the present and to navigate our dances in their constant evolving.
This area of study introduces the space as an active element to generate movements and dances. Through a clear pedagogical pathway, each student is accompanied to develop his/her own technique in relation to the perception and use of the space. Starting from space as a mass that envelops and supports our dancing body, the workshop will explore other ways to work with, to mold the space, to shape it.
The study of voice passes from physicality of the body to the meaning of the words. Sounds, pre verbal text, logics of grammar, cohabitation of movements and voice are some of the areas of study touched in this area. Through the participation of the body and the observation of the mind, the students learn to create dances and poetry in the flow of the present moment.
The object work area is concerned with the ability to use and manipulate elements and materials on stage. Weight and mass, capacity for transformation, the image the object gives off in the environment, inspiration for movement and dance, the object remains the main focus of this area of study.
